Ullens Debates 2019
IBDP Year 1 students at Ullens hosted the Ullens Debates 2019 from 19th April-22nd April at its premises in collaboration with Debate Network Nepal (DNN).
The 4-day event was a British Parliamentary (BP) form of debating that focused on young people especially high school students. The first day was training and orientation for BP debates, where a demonstration debate was held so that the participating teams would properly know how to characterize, structure their speeches and arguments. The second day was solely focused on competitive rounds of debating. The theme of the whole Debate was current affairs. There were different motions regarding ‘Notre Dame’, ‘political leaders getting harmed’,
‘social media taking over our lives’ among others. The third day saw 5 rigorous rounds of
debating following which eight teams among all other participating ones made it to the semi finals. The semi finals on Monday were very tough as all the debaters had relevant experience and knowledge. However, after reaching the consensus, the adjudicators finally decided the
teams to move in finals. Endgame consisting of Mimamsha Dhungel and Saurav Bhatta and the Lobsters consisting of Ang Sonam Sherpa and Shrijan Poudel. The champion of the tournament was team Endgame. Saurav Bhatta was adjudged the Best Speaker and Swastika Pradhan Best Adjudicator.
DNN made the Debates a huge success helping with the motions adjudicators, tabbing of the score, sponsors, and volunteers among others.
