Arnico Panday became CEO of Ullens Education Foundation in February 2020 after serving the Foundation as a Trustee since 2018. Prista and Arnico’s two children attend Ullens School.
Born to a Swiss mother and a Nepali father, Arnico grew up in Zürich, Sindhupalchok and Lalitpur. He earned a Bachelor’s degree with highest honors in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard University, a Masters in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Doctor of Science in Atmospheric Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Arnico was a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University. He then served on the faculty of the University of Virginia before moving back to Nepal. Until January 2020 he was Regional Programme Manager of the Atmosphere Programme at ICIMOD, where he built up and led a team working on research, mitigation and policy of air pollution and climate change in Nepal and the region.
Arnico has served on the Steering Committee of UN’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition, on several Government of Nepal task forces, and on the Expert Working Group of the GoN’s Sagarmatha Sambaad. He is on the Governing Council of Future Earth South Asia, on the Advisory Group of a program at the Japan-based Institute for Global Environmental Strategies Japan, and on the Advisory Board of Nepal Economic Forum. He is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS), and continues to supervise PhD students and publish research.
Arnico is very passionate about improving the quality of education in Nepal. He led the transition at Ullens to online instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic, and looks forward to designing and building Foundation’s future college in Nala, starting other programs in higher education, and building partnerships with like minded schools across Nepal. Arnico enjoys hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and photography.
Aruna Bhattarai Gyawali is the Chief Operating Officer at the Ullens Education Foundation (UEF) where she leads, coordinates and manages operations for all of the Foundation’s projects, and takes direct charge of Procurement, HR and Logistics. Aruna serves as one of the four members in UEF’s Executive Committee. Aruna is a graduate in economics from Delhi University, India and has over 20 years of experience working in child & social welfare organizations.
Aruna has been in leadership roles from the time she began working at the Ullens’ child welfare charity project; Happy House Foundation (HHF). With over seventeen years of her association with ‘Ullens’, first with HHF and now the UEF, Aruna demonstrates professionalism in her continuous strive towards delivering excellence in service - the overall purpose of UEF. During her tenure with HHF, Aruna participated in the IVLP (International Visitor’s Leadership Program), a professional exchange program of the US State Government. The specific program, “Women as Leaders” provided Aruna an opportunity to attend several workshops and seminars on women, girlchild and adolescence, and travel extensively to four different American states.
Aruna’s passion for child welfare, education, and charity motivates her deep appreciation and investment in the core values of UEF: to constantly strive for a better quality of life through quality education. Outside of work, Aruna loves to travel to new places, experiment with new recipes, video-chat with her daughter, and read (among many others) her spiritual leader’s writings
Mr. Medin Lamichhane has been the Principal of Ullens School since it’s inception, and is at the key driver for establishing Ullens with a progressive curriculum with the most updated pedagogy. He’s a life-member of NELTA, an Executive member of SAIBSA, and a Workshop Leader for the International Baccalaureate Organization. He has an Ed. M in Educational Leadership from the Bank Street Graduate School of Education, an MA in Sociology from TU, and an M. Ed in Education from TU. A prolific writer, trainer, he strongly believes in fostering a strong environment for learning and growth, not only for the students, but also for the teachers and anchors professional development workshops on a weekly basis. Mr. Lamichhane continues to lead by example in bringing the entire Ullens community together and ensuring that all voices are heard, and has been exceptional in managing and growing an excellent team for Ullens School.
